Discussing GLP-1 Side Effects With Your Care Team

Shane Grindle, DNP, APRN

Founder, Palm Health & GLP Help

Put adverse-event figures in context

A pooled STEP 1–3 analysis of injected semaglutide 2.4 mg reported nausea in 43.9%, diarrhea in 29.7%, and vomiting in 24.5% of semaglutide-treated participants. Gastrointestinal events led to permanent treatment discontinuation in 4.3% of that treatment group.

Most reported gastrointestinal events were mild or moderate, but individual symptoms and their duration varied. The same analysis found that gastrointestinal adverse events explained little of the weight-loss effect. Nausea is not proof that treatment is effective, and severe symptoms should not be dismissed as normal adaptation.

Discuss tolerability early

The joint nutrition advisory describes practical approaches such as smaller meals and individualized nutrition support. Your prescriber can discuss the product's escalation instructions and tolerability. Do not independently increase or change your dose.

Hydration needs differ, particularly when a person has fluid restrictions or kidney or heart disease. Discuss persistent vomiting, poor intake or dehydration with your care team. There is no established universal bedtime-injection remedy for nausea; follow your medication's instructions.

Follow the medication's urgent-care instructions

The Wegovy and Zepbound patient instructions describe stopping treatment and seeking care for suspected pancreatitis or serious allergic reactions. Severe persistent abdominal pain, breathing difficulty or swelling warrant prompt assessment; call 911 for an emergency. Do not wait for an arbitrary number of hours before seeking help.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do side effects always resolve in four to eight weeks? No. Symptoms differ between people and products. Persistent or worsening symptoms deserve clinical assessment.

Should I keep taking the medicine despite severe symptoms? The Wegovy and Zepbound patient instructions say to stop using the medicine and get medical help right away for serious allergic symptoms, or stop and call your provider right away for severe abdominal pain that does not go away. Call 911 for an emergency.
